Going PHP-free

The PHP development team hereby announces that support for PHP 4 will continue until the end of this year only. After 2007-12-31 there will be no more releases of PHP 4.4.

I hereby announce that my use of PHP will not continue beyond 2007.

My days of battling its awful, inconsistent standard libary which consists entirely of global functions, those needless and ugly $ sigils and its myriad other ways to be awful will be over.

My current use of it is an unfortunate case of bad timing - I was already looking around for alternatives to PHP when my last project which ended up using it was starting, but I didn't take the risk of going with Django, which I'd just discovered but not actually used yet, as I didn't know any Python at the time. Note to future self: take more risks.

My goal is to port my last active PHP application to Django, bit by bit, by the end of the year. If I succeed, I will be fwee!

Our first child, Eleni Willow Buchanan, was born at 01:58am on Friday 30th March, weighing in at 8lb 11.5oz.
